At the beginning of every year, people actually set goals as New Year resolutions. Goals like taking a course, loosing weight, starting a business, quitting a bad habit and so on. At the end of the year they find that they only reach some or none of their goals.
Why does this happen? It happens because their eyes were taken off the goals or by not staying focused. In these times that we live in, only those who remain focused and committed to their goals will actually achieve them.
With so much of the world trying to capture our attention, it is a great challenge to remain focused and tune out the distractions. Our attention is a very precious commodity, that’s the reason the competition for our attention is so enormous and intense.
Distractions like internet, email, cell phones, text messages, movies, face book, my space, Hi5, tagged, YouTube and a whole lot of social, information and networking sites has vastly increased the amount and variety of information that beckons our attention each day.
These attractions steal the time and energy we need for actively seeking ways to find meaning in our lives. If all these are what we focus on, there is no doubt that they will influence who we are on a deep level.
Think about this, why are all these companies spending fortune to compete for your attention? The answer is simple, they know if they get your attention they got you.We need to learn how to tune out the nonessentials and focus on meaningful activities, relationships and intrinsically satisfying goals.
Being focused means being able to ignore those distractions that tempt you away from your path, for as Noel Pebbles said “what you choose to focus your mind on is critical because you will become what you think about most of the time”.
No life ever grows great until it is focused, dedicated and disciplined.
Sincerely, in these times it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain focus. It is left for those who want to achieve their goals to remain focused, committed irrespective of what’s going on around us.
It is also important for parents to monitor their kids, and encourage them to remain focused. Couple of years ago, I made a statement to a group of friends and was surprised to see a similar statement in a book I just finished reading. Here is what I said then, “No matter the technological advancement, no matter the model of HDTV invented, no matter what the computer and the internet will do for us in the future, the habits that will lead to success will NEVER change. Habits like staying focused, perseverance, humility, hardwork, positive attitude etc” All these will never change.
Hence if we passively allow our lives to be influenced by those who only wish to profit from capturing our attention, then we are at a risk of losing hold of the reins of our moral, ethical and spiritual life.
To remain focused keep a mental picture of what you want to achieve at all times. This attracts it to be manifested within your life, see yourself there and try to feel how you would if you were there already. The only thing that can keep you from getting to your goal is you and only you.
Another major distraction to keeping focused are naysayers, don’t listen to naysayers. If someone says you can’t achieve your goal or don’t have faith in what you can accomplish then forget about them and focus on your goals that’s the main thing, like the Germans will say “The main thing is keeping the main thing, the main thing”
As you live your life everyday ask yourself these questions, what is meaningful to me? Am I living in accord with my values? Am I worshipping society’s material trappings? With these questions, you can check yourself to remain focused on your goals. Time and attention are limited; they are precious commodities, it’s important to know what to do during the brief period in which we are alive.” Nothing can add more power to your life than concentrating all your energies on a limited set of targets” Says Nido Qubein.
So tune off the TV, shut down the PC, spend more time to strategise, stop hopping from a career to the other. Only the immature mind hops from one thing to the other, the mature mind seeks to follow through.
In conclusion, always remember what the Jesus said in Luke 9:62, “No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God”.
With your eyes on the goals nothing is stopping you.
